RNC radio row: The place to see and be seen

Chuck Woolery

Radio row at the Republican National Convention is the center of the political universe during the afternoon this week.

Occupying most of the second floor of the Tampa Convention Center, it's the place to watch or be watched before the daily action heats up down the block at the Forum.

Big names visit with radio hosts, jumping from table to table for interviews. Media huddles ensue, hoping to catch a few comments from the likes of GOP bigwigs Herman Cain, Michele Bachman or Karl Rove.

But among the first sights is that of former "Love Connection" host Chuck Woolery.

But more on that in two and two.

"You don't look for the people, you look for the crowd," said one journalist after strolling through the tables, where more than 90 stations have set up shop. They represent Fox Radio, CBS, ABC, NPR and a multitude of affiliates from around the country.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee does his radio show from here. Elected officials get noticed for handshakes. Cellphone cameras flash like starbursts. Geraldo Rivera talks on air, then poses for passers-by (Is he really doing a Gator chomp for a University of Florida fan?)

John Bolton, former U.S Ambassador to the U.N., stops to talk about the Middle East with a TV crew prowling for VIPs. He sums up the interview by saying Mitt Romney, if elected president, is "going to have a very full agenda internationally because of the failed policies of the Obama administration."

He's a commentator for Fox News, by the way.

Which brings us back to the Woolery Radio Network, the former TV host's political outlet. Woolery has long been politically active and even helped start a conservative political action committee pushing for congressional term limits.

"I have always said if you have a conservative story it will win because it is real," Woolery said. "It has facts."
Woolery, who has hosted several game shows in his television career, also is an avid outdoorsman. For him, the Tampa area is a perfect place to host the RNC.

"I love Tampa," he said. "I can't wait to come back."
