The Convention Begins

We decided to knock out a couple interviews Tuesday morning at the hotel, so we could have a story or two done before the speeches began that afternoon at the forum. We had discovered that we would not be able to bring our laptops there, so this ended up helping all of us stay ahead of the game. The buses came to bring us to the forum, and so began our first experience with the nomination process.

Three communication and one of the political science students were able to attend Tuesday's events, and after passing through the security checkpoint we made our way to our seats. The party began the afternoon by introducing some of the people running for office and taking care of some RNC business, before the speakers took to the podium to deliver their messages. I was able to meet former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and get a photo with him, which was a pretty good experience. There are so many big political players here, and almost all of them are more than willing to talk to us as we go through the convention events this week.

After all the states cast their votes, Mitt Romney was officially named the 2012 GOP nominee, with Paul Ryan as his running mate. Romney's wife Ann took to the stage to give a speech about her support for her husband, which was a nice touch to an already incredible lineup. The keynote speaker for Tuesday night was Governor Chris Christie, who gave an inspiring speech to an enthusiastic crowd, invigorating the party as the convention heads into its second day of speeches.
